'Magic Mike XXL' gets release date for summer 2015

By Chelsea Lewis ,

Magic Mike will be returning to theaters with the sequel Magic Mike XXL. Warner Bros. made the announcement on Tuesday that Magic Mike XXL will be released on July 3, 2015.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Channing Tatum is currently writing the sequel and that the film will be directed by Gregory Jacobs. Jacobs was Steven Soderbergh's assistant on Magic Mike.

ABC reported that it is rumored that most of the original cast will return for the sequel but no casting news has been officially announced.

Tatum spoke about working on this project following the MTV Movie Awards. "We want to have real, like reality in it, but we don’t want to make, like, some dark drama. There was some darkness in the last movie and I think it surprised people and shocked people. This one, we want to have a lot of conflict and a lot of struggle, but we also want there to be … ridiculous stuff that you would never see in a movie, on the face of the earth, ever again," said Tatum.

The original was released back in 2012 and starred Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer and Matt Bomer. Magic Mike brought in $167 million worldwide and was well received by critics and fans.
