A Detroit motorist is in critical condition after being violently beaten by a mob when he stopped to check on a boy he accidentally hit with his truck on Wednesday afternoon.
The 54-year-old man from Roseville is currently in critical condition at the hospital, police said, the Detroit Free Press reports. Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody spoke at a news conference on Thursday and said the man "is still in critical condition and it's really not looking good at all."
The man was beat by about 10 to 12 people and suffered several head injuries.
According to The Associated Press, the police sergeant said that the driver was not at fault for the accident. The kid stepped off the curb and was struck at low speeds by the truck. The man immediately stopped and went to see how the kid was. "No way he could have stopped in time."
Woody explained that "The man did try to stop and render aid. He did everything he could exactly right."
The 10-year-old boy's father is currently in police custody, but they say that it is for an unrelated warrant and not the beating. Nobody has been arrested for that yet as police continue to investigate.
The 10-year-old boy was also hospitalized, but in much better condition than the motorist.
