New Orleans Saints re-sign Robert Meachem

By Alex Jordan,

Free-agent wide receiver Robert Meachem re-signed with the New Orleans Saints on Friday. It’s a one-year deal and terms were not disclosed.

The Saints didn’t have a lot of depth at the receiver position. Earlier this offseason they released Lance Moore. Meachem will help add depth to the receiver position. He will compete with Joe Morgan, Nick Toon, and Andy Tanner for starting spots, according to ESPN.

Marques Colston and Kenny Stills are the returning receivers for the Saints.

Meachem was drafted by the Saints in 2007 as the 27th overall pick. He has played seven of his eight seasons with the Saints. In 2012 he played for the San Diego Chargers. He struggled while with the Charges however and was released at the end of the season.

Last year, he had 16 catches for 324 yards and two touchdowns, according to the Associated Press. Meachem has 171 receptions for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns in his career.

The Saints have used Meachem as a backup. However he might not be a backup anymore as there isn’t a lot of depth at the receiver position for the Saints. It will be interesting to see if Meachem gets a starting role for next season. The Saints could also draft a receiver to help add depth to that position.
