The Voice: Playoffs continue

By Chelsea Lewis ,

Last week, The Voice kicked off the new playoff rounds. Team Blake now has locked in which vocalists would be advancing to the live shows. Now, Team Shakira and Team Adam will finalize which vocalists from their teams will be headed to the live shows.

First up to the stage was Kristen Merlin who chose to sing “Two Black Cadillacs,” by Carrie Underwood. Levine started off the comments by saying that this was one of the best performances from Merlin so far in this competition, Shelton added that this was also one of his favorite performances from Merlin. Usher added that she is one of the strongest members of the competition. Shakira said that she was thrilled and this performance made her so happy.

Following Merlin was Deja Hall, who is one of the youngest vocalists in the competition. Hall decided to sing “Battlefield” by Jordin Sparks. Shelton stated off the comments by saying that this performance brought Hall out of her shell. Usher added that Hall really has grown in this competition. Levine said that for Hall the sky is the limit moving forward. Shakira added that she feels lucky to be a witness in this process that really shows how talented Hall is.

Tess Boyer, who has had three coaches so far in this competition, ended up on Team Shakira. Boyer performed “Only Human” by Christina Perri. Levine said that this is one of the best performances of this season so far. Usher, who coached Boyer first, said that she is superhuman to be able to hold notes like she does. Shelton added that he admires Boyer because she is always stepping up to the challenge. Shakira said that Boyer is a little miracle that happened to Team Shakira.

Patrick Thomas took the stage next. Thomas chose to sing “Trouble.” Levine, who used to coach Thomas, started off the comments by saying that he was impressed with the performance. Usher said that until this performance he did not know who Thomas was as an artist. Shelton added that he is glad that Thomas is with a coach who understands his vocal range. Shakira said that Thomas really had a moment on stage.

Closing out the performances for Team Shakira was Dani Moz, who sang “Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga. Levine started off the comments by saying the emotion in the song was good and that Shakira should advance Moz to the next round. Shelton said that this performance was a game changer for who should move forward from Team Shakira. Usher said that Moz is a passionate artist and that this performance wasn’t flawless but that it brought him closer to her as an artist. Shakira said that she saw a true artist on stage and that she made her connect with the emotions in the song.

Shakira was then left with the hard decision of who to advance to the live shows. After much deliberation, Boyer, Merlin, and Moz all advanced to the live shows.

Taking the stage next was Team Adam. First up was Delvin Choice, who chose to sing “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green. Shelton added that Choice has really come far in this competition. Usher said that he has one of the most unique vocal ranges on this season of The Voice. Shakira said that he really took the audience on a ride. Levine rounded out the comments by saying that it is shocking that no one turned around for Choice when he auditioned last season and that with this performance it is clear Team Adam is the team to beat.

Jake Barker took the stage next and picked “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 to perform. Shelton started off the comments by saying that the performance was good and he did hear a Justin Timberlake influence. Usher said that, as always, he believes in Barker. Shakira added that the performance was very solid overall. Levine said that he really talked with Barker about the song and that he has seen Barker go from 0 to 60 since he started in this competition.

Kat Perkins followed Barker, taking on Journey’s “Open Arms.” Usher started off the comments by saying that Perkins should be very proud of herself and that her performance was flawless. Shakira said that the performance was emotional and that she was always on top of her game. Shelton said that when Perkins performed the song, it felt like a new song. Levine also continued with the praise saying that this is only the start for Perkins.

Up next to the Voice stage was Morgan Wallen. Wallen picked “Stay” by Florida Georgia Line to perform. Usher added that this song choice was a perfect direction for Wallen. Shelton added that he hears both country and rock tones in his voice and he is truly a fan of Wallen. Levine said that he does have to thank Usher for waking him up to Wallen and that with Shelton’s approval he really understands what country music can do for him as an artist.

Christina Grimmie closed out the show for Team Adam. Grimmie chose to perform “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. Shelton said that Grimmie was the best singer on Team Adam and that is impressive that such a big voice comes out of a smaller person. Usher said that Grimmie was a ball of fire. Levine said that this was an excellent song choice and that she is a true artist.

Following all of the performances on Team Adam, it was left up to Levine to decide who would advance to the live shows. In the end, Grimmie, Choice, and Perkins advanced to the live shows representing Team Adam.

Tuesday night will feature Team Usher competing for a spot in the live shows.
