The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened strong domestically Thursday night, but it also has done well overseas, especially in Hong Kong, where it pulled in a new opening day record.
The Sony film grossed $1.23 million (HK$9.56 million) on May 1, which is the biggest opening ever for the territory, according to numbers from Hong Kong Box Office Ltd, notes The Hollywood Reporter. The superhero sequel premiered on 720 screens and will expand into mainland China on Sunday.
Opening late on Thursday domestically, Amazing Spider-Man 2 has started off strong, reports Deadline. The Andrew Garfield-starring flick grossed $8.7 million in less than a full day of showings. That debut is bigger than Thor: The Dark World's $7.1 million, but not good enough to top the more recent Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which grossed $10.2 million.
As previously reported, the film is projected to earn about $95 million for its opening weekend in the States and Thursday night's numbers remain in line with those estimates. Amazing Spider-Man 2 has already earned $155 million in overseas markets where it opened earlier.
