X-Men: Days of Future Past got off to a fairly strong start at the box office heading into Memorial Day weekend, while Adam Sandler's new film Blended, clearly won't be competing for either of the top two spots.
The latest X-Men film earned $36 million at the box office, with $8.1 million coming from late Thursday showings. Forbes reports that the film is projected to earn about $110 million through the four-day weekend. That's a decent opening figure, but nothing spectacular for the franchise.
In the film's second weekend, Godzilla raked in another $8.8 million and will likely gross about $40 million for the weekend. Gareth Edwards' film is already up to $126 million domestically, with a worldwide cume of $220 million.
The second new wide release, Sandler's Blended only managed $4.4 million, and could struggle to even reach $17 million over the four-day holiday weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This will likely be one of Sandler's worst openings openings in recent years.
Universal's Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy Neighbors managed $4.2 million for its third Friday at the box office. The R-rated comedy manage to hit the $100 million mark yesterday.
Rounding out the top five was Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which pulled in $2 million and might gross about $10 million, which would bring the domestic cume to $187 million. The super hero flick has already earned $650 million at the worldwide box office.
