'Breaking Bad' spinoff 'Better Call Saul' gains Michael McKean

Michael McKean, a veteran of the Christopher Guest stock company, has signed on to join Better Call Saul, AMC’s Breaking Bad spinoff. He is the first actor to join the show that did not appear in Vince Gilligan’s acclaimed original series.

Better Call Saul focuses on lawyer Saul Goodman’s career before Walter White hired him. Bob Odenkirk has signed on to reprise his role as Saul and Jonathan Banks will play Michael “Mike” Ehrmantraut, Saul’s fixer.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, McKean will star as Dr. Thurber, another attorney who is dealing with an unusual affliction.

This news follows E! News’ February report that Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were both in talk to make recurring appearances in Better Call Saul. The two actors won numerous awards and critical acclaim for their lead performances in Breaking Bad, which ended last year.

Better Call Saul will start this fall. As for McKean, he’s best known for roles in Guest’s This Is Spinal Tap and Best in Show. He also starred on Laverne & Shirley and Guest’s Family Tree HBO series.
