Clay Aiken wins North Carolina primary after opponent Keith Crisco dies

Clay Aiken’s opponent Keith Crisco died after he fell in his home in North Carolina on Monday, which means that the American Idol alum won the Democratic primary.

"Keith came from humble beginnings. No matter how high he rose - to Harvard, to the White House and to the Governor's Cabinet - he never forgot where he came from," Aiken said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. "He was a gentleman, a good and honorable man and an extraordinary public servant. I was honored to know him."

Keith Crisco, 71, lived in Asheboro, about 65 miles west of Raleigh. John Ogburn, Asheboro city manager, confirmed that the police and fire department responded to the call regarding the accident in Crisco’s home. The state medical examiner is now expected to find out the cause of death, according to The Courier-Tribune.

Last Tuesday, Aiken was leading in the primary by less than 400 votes. Aiken is currently being declared an apparent democratic nominee, as the results didn't become official until after a review by the state elections board, according to the WCNC. Elections board spokesman Joshua Lawson said the board must “certify the vote totals.”
