Cronut creator Dominique Ansel, Nancy Silverton win 2014 James Beard Foundation honors

The James Beard Foundation has named the best of the best in culinary arts in the U.S. for 2014. Dominique Ansel, who created a frenzy with his Cronut in New York City last year, and Nancy Silverton of Los Angeles’ Pizzeria Mozza, are just a few of the big names to take home honors.

Heston Blumenthal’s Historic Heston was named the Cookbook of the Year, while Amy Thielen’s The New Midwestern Table: 200 Heartland Recipes was named the top American Cooking book. Heston also won the Cooking from a Professional Point of View honor.

Barefoot Contessa: Back to Basics host Ina Garten won Outstanding Personality/Host. Anthony Bourdain and Martha Stewart also took home awards for their TV work.

The Best Chefs in America, according to the foundation, are Dave Beran (Chicago); Vikram Sunderam (Washington, DC); Justin Aprahamian (Milwaukee); April Bloomfield (New York City); Jamie Bissonnette (Boston); Naomi Pomeroy (Portland, Or.); Ryan Prewitt (New Orleans); Sue Zemanick (New Orleans); Ashley Christensen (Raleigh); Chris Shepard (Houston); and Daniel Patterson (San Francisco).

Ansel won Outstanding Pastry Chef after a year of headline-making desserts. However, the overall Outstanding Chef Award went to Silverton. According to The Associated Press, she is just the fourth woman to receive the honor and first since Judy Rodgers in 2004.
