At least four people were killed and several were injured when a tour bus overturned on a highway early Wednesday morning.
The Associated Press reported that authorities said that the accident happened after 2:00 a.m. when a big rig traveling east jackknifed and spilled its load of steel pipes into other lanes.
“The pipes subsequently caused some of the vehicles to crash into them in the eastbound lanes and it appears they could have rolled into westbound traffic which is where the bus was traveling,” Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said. “We don’t know if the bus hit the pipes or swerved to avoid hitting the pipes.”
CBS Los Angeles noted that the passenger bus, in an effort to avoid the pipes, rolled approximately 50 feet off the roadway then down an embankment and ended up on its side.
The California Highway Patrol said that the bus had traveled to the area from Texas.
