Godzilla has now become the largest box office opening for a movie in 2014, passing popular films such as Captain America: The Winter Solider and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
AP reported that the monster movie will be taking the No. 1 spot at the box office, putting Universal Pictures Neighbors in the number two spot this week.
Neighbors impressed for another week taking in $26 million.
Godzilla started off strong with late night shows on Thursday making over $9 million and increase its total to with Friday showings to $38.5 million.
USA Today added that the box office results are higher than what was projected for the opening weekend of the film. Most predicted the film would make around $70 million.
This box office total makes it the biggest opening for a monster movie of all time. Director Edwards has said in many interviews that the goal with the project was to remain true to the iconic Japanese Godzilla movies made by Japan's Toho studio.
Along with opening in North America, the film opened internationally, as well.
