Lansal, Sherman Produce recall hummus and walnuts over Listeria concerns

Two companies issued recalls on hummus and walnuts on Thursday due to potential bacterial contamination.

Lansal Inc said that while no one has reported getting sick from their hummus and dip products, the company still needed to recall about 14,860 points of product, reports CBS News. The potential contamination was discovered after the Texas Department of Health conducted a routine test of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus.

Other Lansal products on recall include Archer Farms roasted red pepper with roasted red pepper topping, Trader Joe's 5 layered dip , Giant Eagle chipotle hummus and Tryst yellow lentil hummus with sunflower seeds and apricots.

Sherman Produce is recalled 241 25-pound cases of bulk walnuts as well as 10 ounce trays packaged under the Schnucks' brand name. A sampling done by the Federal Drug and Administration found Listeria in the manufacturing facility.

According to CNN, both recalls were voluntary, since Listeria monocytogenes could cause serious infections in people who have weakened immune systems.

While most symptoms of Listeria are mild, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say on their website some potential symptoms include fever, diarrhea, headache, convulsions and stiff neck. Additionally, pregnant women could suffer miscarriages.
