Actress Laura Linney has signed on to co-star in A Slight Trick of the Mind, which will star Sir Ian McKellen as an aging Sherlock Holmes.
A Slight Trick of the Mind will be directed by Bill Condon, who recently made The Fifth Estate and also directed Twilight. In this film, Holmes will be reminded of a 50-year-old case that he had yet to solve. It is based on Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel, which was adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Linney signed on to play Mrs. Munro, who is Holmes’ housekeeper. The character has a son that Holmes has taken an interest in, acting as a parent.
“It’s a really great mystery about who Sherlock Holmes is, but it’s also a lovely, delicate movie about what happens as you get older,” Condon told EW.
Condon has worked with both McKellen and Linney before. Linney recently appeared in The Fifth Estate and also starred in Kinsey, which earned her an Oscar nomination. McKellen has been looking for an opportunity to work with Condon for the first time since 1998’s Gods and Monsters and finally found it.
“Nothing ever came close, and then I read this and it feels like one icon playing another,” Condon added.
Production for A Slight Trick of the Mind is now set for July in England.
