Lifetime is joining the race to get more content inspired by the Bible on the small screen. The cable network announced plans to adapt the best-selling novel The Red Tent for television.
The miniseries will start production this month in Morocco. Minnie Driver (About A Boy) is slated to star, along with Morena Baccarin (Homeland), Rebecca Ferguson and Debra Winger. Will Tudor and Iain Glen, who have both appeared in Game of Thrones, will also be in the series.
The Red Tent was written by Anita Diamant and centers on the daughter of Leah and Jacob, Dinah. It expands upon Dinah’s story, as she was hardly mentioned in the Old Testament. Ferguson will play Dinah, while Driver and Baccarin will play Leah and Rachel, respectively. Glen is playing Jacob.
“The Red Tent brings premium and popular elements to a unique and timeless story,” Rob Sharenow, EVP and General Manager, Lifetime, said in a statement. “It perfectly articulates our vision for Lifetime as the destination for epic movie events.”
Lifetime said the series will begin later this year. It will air over two nights.
This is the latest Biblical series announced in Hollywood since History’s The Bible was a stunning success last year. NBC is developing Mark Burnett’s sequel to The Bible, A.D.: Beyond The Bible. Last month, Fox announced Nazareth, which will be a coming-of-age story about Jesus.
