Professional golfer, Rory McIlroy, who is currently ranked 10th in the world, has called off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
The 25-year-old golf pro admitted in a statement that he knew he “wasn’t ready” for marriage when the invitations went out this past weekend.
"There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails,” he told the Press Association, CNN reports.
He went on to say, “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."
McIlroy is set to compete in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in England. Despite saying he wouldn’t talk about the break-up, he did say a few words about it in a press conference on Thursday before the event.
He said the split was “mutual and amicable” and he’s now focused on the game.
The couple of three years announced their engagement on New Year’s Day this year.
