BET Awards 2014 winners list; Pharrell Williams, Lupita Nyong'o and '12 Years A Slave' receive honors

By Elizabeth Learned,

Hosted by Chris Rock, who referred to the show as the “Black World Cup,” the BET Awards celebrated many of the talented African American artists we see and hear on television and radio. There were many winners and honorable mentions at the 2014 BET Awards that reminded us of their achievements.

In addition to these achievements, the program also paid tribute to those lost, such as Bobby Womack.

The awards ceremony also honored many other artists, including artist Lionel Richie, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

For the Humanitarian Award, the BET Awards put a spotlight on the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Bill, before introducing Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of civil rights leader Medger Evers.

The “In Memoriam” segment was introduced by Phylicia Rashad and featured civil rights activist Ruby Dee and renowned author Maya Angelou.

Some of the evening’s winners included Pharrell Williams for Best Video of the Year for “Happy” while the Best Actress award went to the beautiful and talented Lupita Nyong’o. 12 Years A Slave took home the award for Best Picture.
