'Book of Mormon' star Andrew Rannells replacing Neil Patrick Harris in 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch'

By Elizabeth Sudlow,

There’s a new star for Hedwig and the Angry Inch coming soon on Broadway and it just might be an actor you expected.

With Neil Patrick Harris’ limited engagement coming to an end in August, it is a fact that someone new would need to strap on the high heels and embrace the blonde wig. Variety is reporting that it will be former Book of Mormon lead Andrew Rannells.

Rannells was nominated for the Best Actor in a Musical Tony, which Harris won this year for his role as Hedwig, back in 2011. He later went on to star in television series such as The New Normal and Girls. This role brings him home to Broadway.

Entertainment Weekly notes that this will not be Rannells' first time playing the transgender German rocker. He played the role in a production in Austin, Texas back in 2001 and then later performed a number at Joe’s Pub for a 2011 holiday concert.

Many wonder if the show can survive without Harris’ name bringing in ticket sales, though. Rannells' first performance is Aug. 20. and will continue through Oct. 12.
