Creepy doll shrine created more than 50 years ago now a tourist attraction

By Melissa Barclay,

An island in Mexico where a young girl supposedly drowned more than 50 years ago continues to attract tourists due to one man's creepy project.

Isla de la Munecas, the Island of the Dolls, was created by Don Julian Santana.

According to Atlas Obscura, Santana abandoned his family and moved onto the island near where a young girl is said to have drowned.

To remember the young girl, Santana began stringing up dolls, and even kept his own cabin filled as well.

Santana dedicated his life to collecting the lost dolls, which he found from the nearby canals and trash around the island. It is also said that he traded with locals in order to obtain even more dolls.

Locals claim the place is haunted by the girls spirit, who is also said to haunt the artist as well, reported the Daily Mail.

It is also said that the first doll the artist found was possessed by the dead girl’s spirit.

Ironically, in 2001 Santana died in the same canal where the young girl drowned.

More dolls have been added to the island over the years.
