Actor/director Mel Gibson and director William Friedkin will be recognized at the international film festival at the Czech spa city of Karlovy Vary.
At the festival, Gibson will present his 2006 movie, Apocalypto. Competing films include Low Down by American director Jeff Preiss and Welkome Home by Russian director Angelina Nikonova, according to the Associated Press.
The festival’s grand jury will be led by Spanish producer Luis Minarro. This year, twelve films are competing for the top prize, the Crystal Globe.
According to the official website, the Karlovy Vary IFF will present films from all over the world. Selected films for the festival were announced in earlier this month. There are a number of categories, including the East of the West, which includes movies from Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Turkey, and the countries that made up the U.S.S.R. Some independent movies are presented in collaboration with Czech television. There are also documentaries.
Gibson isn’t the only celebrity slated to appear at this year. Hollywood actress Laura Dern will be attending.
The 49th annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival opens on July 4 and runs through July 12.
