David Fincher and Rooney Mara may reunite for 'Red Sparrow'

By Will Ashton,

With The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, director David Fincher made Rooney Mara a household name. While both have been doing their own projects of late, it appears that the two may soon be working in each others' company again, as they are planning to board the spy thriller Red Sparrow.

Deadline first word on the film's new developments. Initially, director Darren Aronofsky was set to make the film, but he backed out of the project in January, as The Hollywood Reporter noted.

Writing the film will be Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle), based on the novel by Jason Matthews. While he is only in negotiations, it is expected that Fox will move quickly on the deal so that Singer can get working on the script and, subsequently, can secure both Fincher and Mara to the film.

This thriller will center on two intelligence agents working in a modern-day Russia. Mara will be playing Dominika Egorova, a Russian spy forced to become a "Sparrow," trained in the art of seduction.

Although there was talk for some time that Fincher and Mara would be working together again in the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it appears that Sony's reluctance to make the movie suggests that they are simply just going to be moving on to different projects.

Fincher's latest work will be seen on Oct. 3, as Gone Girl comes into theaters. Meanwhile, Mara was last seen in last year's Her, Side Effects and Ain't Them Bodies Saints, and will be seen in Trash and an untitled Terrance Malick movie later this year. She is currently filming a role in Pan.
