The Fault In Our Stars certainly is not a summer blockbuster in the traditional sense, as there’s no flying superheroes or giant monsters. But John Green’s avid teen fans are coming out in force to see it and they certainly did that Thursday. The film got off to a start usually reserved for a superhero movie.
The 20th Century Fox film grossed $8.2 million Thursday night, which is amazing for a drama that centers on the romance between two cancer patients. According to TheWrap, that number also includes the super fans who turned out for The Night Before Our Stars, a special event Fox screened before the film. (The $25 super fan ticket price also helped out.)
Shailene Woodley, who scored a hit with Divergent earlier this year, stars in the film with Ansel Elgort. The producers behind the film, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, also produced the Twilight series at Summit Entertainment.
Fox is probably surprised to learn that Fault made even more than the studio’s X-Men: Days of Future Past did for early screenings. That movie made $8.1 million. Still, Fault did fall shy of Godzilla’s $9.3 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow made just $1.8 million Thursday. That has to be disappointing, since the sci-fi film is earning good reviews. Hopefully business will pick up over the weekend for the movie.
Fault will likely gross $40 million by the end of the weekend, unless it turns out to be really frontloaded.
