Grizzlies' James Johnson arrested for domestic violence

By Michelle Kapusta,

Memphis Grizzlies forward James Johnson was arrested Saturday morning for an alleged domestic violence dispute he had with his wife at their Memphis home.

FOX13 reported that Johnson’s wife called police early Saturday morning and claimed that her husband "hit her in the face and choked her." However, she refused medical treatment.

The Associated Press noted that the 27-year-old was booked into the Shelby County Jail at 4:35 a.m. and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.

After his arrest, the Grizzlies released the following statement:

"We are currently gathering information regarding this morning's report involving James Johnson. We have no further comment at this time."

The 6'9", 248-pound forward attended Wake Forest University and declared his NBA eligibility after his sophomore year. He was drafted 16th overall in the 2009 draft by the Chicago Bulls and also had stints with the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings.

Johnson averaged 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 18 minutes per game this season for Memphis. He is scheduled to become a free agent next month.
