Idina Menzel's 'If/Then' makes chart history

By Elizabeth Sudlow,

King Midas needs to find somewhere else to reign because Idina Menzel has taken over with the golden touch. Midas had his hand, but Menzel has her voice, as evinced by the charting Broadway cast album from If/Then.

Billboard notes that the original cast recording of Menzel’s newest Broadway show If/Then made its debut on the Billboard 200 at No. 19, the highest mark for a cast album since 1996. In the week ending June 8, the album sold 15,000 copies. The cast album before this to make the No. 19 slot was Rent on September 14, 1996 with 43,000 sold. Coincidentally, Menzel starred in both productions.

If/Then stars Menzel depicting a woman that figures out how to make the best decisions in life while living in New York. She performed the number “Always Starting Over” at the Tony Awards this past Sunday as she was nominated for an award.

Entertainment Weekly also reports that Menzel is the first Tony-winning actor to have a top 10 single on the charts, all thanks to “Let It Go” from Frozen, as it hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Book of Mormon and Dreamgirls are the only other cast albums to reach the top 20 since 1980.
