Legendary Pictures' 'Pacific Rim 2' snags April 2017 release date

Universal announced on Thursday that Legendary Pictures' Pacific Rim 2 is set to hit theaters on April 7, 2017.

The giant robot fighting film will again be directed by Guillermo del Toro and will also hit theaters in IMAX and 3D, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Del Toro ad Zak Penn are partnering up to pen the script.

Jillian Share, Callum Greene and Mary Parent are on board to executive produce, while Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce alongside del Toro.

At the moment, the only film set for that weekend to compete with the sequel to the 2013 hit is the animated film Ferdinand from Fox. The original cast of Pacific Rim consisted of Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day, but there hasn't been any word if either of the latter three will return.

The announcement came shortly after Universal decided to pull their upcoming James Marsden and Karl Urban thriller The Loft, from the release calendar. The film was originally set to hit theaters Aug. 29. In its place will be As Above/So Below.
