Richard Dunn got stuck in Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport overnight. While he could have left the airport to sleep at a hotel, he decided to see if he could really put together a full music video all by himself. And obviously, the only song he could possibly use is Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” sung by Celine Dion.
Dunn posted the video, which was made using only his iPhone, on Vimeo and it has gone viral this week, earning over 4 million views and over 1,000 likes. Hundreds of viewers have left comments, asking him how he got certain angles and edited the video together.
It is clear from the video that Dunn has a great sense of humor. We see him walking backwards on the moving walkways, sitting on an escalator and even staring at a woman in a poster, hoping that she comes to life. There’s also a great Flashdance parody in there. He put his talents as a lighting designer to use.
According to CBC, the Georgia resident was bumped off a flight and the next one wasn’t available until 6 in the morning. “I thought, well I don’t have enough time to go to a hotel so what do I do? I’ve got my phone and an empty movie set, let’s see what trouble I can get into,” he told the site.
The only help he needed was some tape. Thankfully, a mechanic was there and he used it to create a makeshift tripod with bags and a ruler. For his escalator shots, he had to rush up the stairs to make sure that the phone, which was taped to a bag, didn’t get stuck.
Here’s the genius video:
