Breastfeeding in public has been a controversial issue for years. However, breastfeeding during a graduation gave one mother unexpected attention.
Karlesha Thurman, 25, asked a classmate to take a picture of her and her 4-month-old daughter during her graduation as she breastfed.
Thurman posted the photo to a Facebook group “Black Women Do BreastFeed” and received media attention overnight, reported.
“Nobody there had a problem with it. I was facing the other graduates. The crowd couldn't see me,” she said.
Twitter users expressed their harsh words about Thurman’s decision.
“Not to mention the fact that she took a picture. Like breastfeeding is one thing, at/during a graduation in public is another AND a picture,” tweeted @whatdidaprilsay.
Thurman defended her decision by saying her daughter was the reason she was able to graduate, The Daily Mail reported.
When Thurman found out she was pregnant she contemplated dropping out, but stayed for the sake of providing a better life for her daughter.
Despite the backlash, Thurman remains strong.
“I was proud of the fact that not only did I graduate but that I got to share the moment with the one person who is the most important to me and that is my daughter," she said.
