Parking garage where reporter Bob Woodward met with 'Deep Throat' to be demolished

By Elizabeth Learned,

The parking garage where reporter Bob Woodward met with an anonymous source known as ‘Deep Throat’ is set to be demolished.

USA Today reported that a building for residential and commercial purposes will replace the infamous meeting site. Woodward was a reporter for the Washington Post when he met with Deep Throat, who has since been revealed to be Mark Felt, a top official for the FBI at the time.

Woodward was reporting on the Watergate scandal and Felt was his key source. Felt gave Woodward details that would lead to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974.

Felt chose the parking garage, at spot 32D, and he met with Woodward six times between 1972 and 1973.

The Washington Post reports the decision came from the Arlington County Board, which unanimously voted to let Monday Properties demolish the site.

While the plan is to raze the parking garage underneath the building, the county will keep a historical marker that was placed at the site in 2011. The landowner will also create a memorial to commemorate the history of the garage.

Designing the new building will be a process that will take place over two years and the demolition will most likely take place in 2017.
