Posey, Cain power Giants past Mets

The San Francisco Giants became the first team in the majors to record 40 wins this season with their 4-2 victory over the visiting New York Mets.
Giants starter Matt Cain returned from a brief stint on the disabled list and was stellar. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
“He was sharp; what a great job,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said in this postgame press conference on MLB.com. “You miss what three turns in your rotation and got out there and throw the ball like that and have that kind of command and stuff; all his pitches were crisp. It’s a great effort with the time that he’s missed.”
With the game tied at two in the eighth inning, San Francisco catcher Buster Posey ripped a two-run home run 416 feet into the left-center field stands to put the Giants on top for good.
Earlier in the game, the Giants drew first blood, when shortstop Brandon Crawford hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, New York second baseman Daniel Murphy plated the Mets’ two runs with a homer to right field.
Crawford delivered again for the Giants, with an RBI single to center to tie the game at two in the bottom of the seventh.
Jon Niese pitched for New York, going seven innings and giving up five hits and two runs. Reliever Carlos Torres, who gave up the homer to Posey, suffered the loss.
For the Giants, reliever Jeremy Affeldt got the win, pitching a scoreless eighth inning, and closer Sergio Romo recorded his 19th save of the season with a perfect ninth, reports ESPN.
As the two teams get set for action on Saturday, they are streaking in opposite directions. The Mets have lost four straight, while the Giants have won their last three.
