Prince plays surprise concert for 'Purple Rain' costar Apollonia Kotero

By Andrew Wilson,

In the week marking the 30th anniversary of his masterpiece Purple Rain, Prince commemorated the landmark by playing a surprise show at his Paisley Park studios with movie co-star Apollonia Kotero in attendance.

According to Consequence of Sound, the event took place on Saturday. This was Apollonia’s first time to the famed estate also, and she was treated to an eight-song concert from the Purple One and 3rdEyeGirl.

Apollonia wrote about the event on her Facebook but the comments were later deleted, Rolling Stone reported. She noted the time was 4:42 a.m. when they played, and was also given a tour of Paisley Park. Prince also released almost 10 minutes of audio from the private show on YouTube.

In other Purple Rain news, politicians even commemorated the anniversary posting tweets and Vine videos covering the title song. Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison first posted a video of himself, and New York Rep. Joe Crowley responded with one of his own.

A special two-disc edition of the Purple Rain soundtrack, which will feature several unreleased songs from that time period, is set to be released this summer.
