Smith performed the cover on the radio program, SiriusXM Hits 1. They posted the video over the weekend for viewing on the internet. The video is getting attention on YouTube, with views over one million.

Smith appeared with a keyboard player and guitarist in the video, according to Hollywood Life.

Sam Smith, 21, told Rolling Stone, "A Whitney Houston song that makes me happy – it's a feel-good song. I love the juxtaposition of a melancholy lyric with an upbeat sound. People forget that's how she rose to fame. The more mature Whitney, like 'I Will Always Love You,' came later."

Smith says that he is inspired by female vocalists, a list which includes Mariah Carey, Etta James, and Aretha Franklin who remind him about “empowerment and independence.”

A snippet of the song appeared in a recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
