On Tuesday, Dennis Kneier resigned from his position as mayor of San Marino, California due to the disgrace of being caught on video throwing a bag of dog poop onto the property of his neighbor, Philip Lau.
A little more than a week ago, Kneier’s neighbor discovered a bag of dog poop on his walkway and, checking his surveillance video, recognized the mayor as the culprit.
Lao gave the surveillance video to the San Marino police when he reported the incident. After 10 days of the incriminating clip reaching viral status on YouTube, the mayor has decided to leave his position, as reported by the Pasadena Star-News.
Though the mayor apologized for his action, both publicly and to Lau, and is planning to pay the fine for littering, he is very aware of the public backlash and is therefore leaving stepping down. Kneier will remain a city councilman.
In a statement to NBC News Los Angeles, Kneier stated, “It’s caused embarrassment to the city, and as a result that affects my ability to lead the council and I thought it would be the very best thing, for the city, for us to move forward and have a reorganization and have a new mayor.”
