United Airlines flight diverted after emergency chute opens

A flight that was taking passengers from Chicago to California was diverted to Wichita, Kansas after the plane’s emergency evacuation shoot apparently opened.

According to USA Today, the original flight path of the plane was going from Chicago O’Hare to John Wayne airport when it made the stop around 10:30 pm. It wasn’t clear why the emergency chute opened, but no one on the flight was injured.

ABC News reported the airplane was under United Airlines and there were 96 passengers and five crewmembers on the plane. A statement from the airline said, “No one was injured and the flight landed safely.”

A passenger, Michael Davis, was one of many who said they heard what appeared to be a pop before seeing the slide being deployed. He said, “It was interesting. Nobody was scared or anything.”

The airline offered hotel accommodations to the passengers who were on the flight.

According to The Wichita Eagle, when the slide deployed, passengers got their cell phones out to begin taking videos. The pilot was calm as he informed the passengers he would figure out a place for them to land.

There have been other incidents where the emergency chute deployed for no reason, once in November 2013, and another time in 2008 on a flight carrying President Barrack Obama when he was still a senator.
