Archie to be killed off defending best friend

By Mila Whiteley,

Archie, the beloved comic book hero, will die protecting his gay best friend Kevin Keller in an upcoming issue of Life with Archie.

Archie, who has been in comics since 1941, will jump in front of a bullet aimed for Keller, protecting his friend and ensuring the future of Riverdale, according to the Associated Press. Keller, who joined the Archie gang in 2010, is a senator pushing for gun control in the Life with Archie series.

Through his sacrifice for his friend, Archie dies in a heroic way appropriate for such a beloved character.

"Archie dies as he lived -- heroically," Archie Comics publisher and Co-CEO Jon Goldwater told CNN. "He dies saving the life of a friend, and does it in his usual selfless way. Archie has always been a representation of us -- the best of us. Our strengths and our faults."

Fortunately for fans of the freckled character, Life with Archie shows snapshots of Archie’s life (and now death) in the future. As CNN reports, fans can still read about present day Archie in other new stories without having to resort to the archives.

Life with Archie no. 36 comes out on July 16.
