College Football Playoff trophy unveiled

By Ian Sacks,

With a new format to crown a champion in place for college football, a new trophy was in order. The trophy for the inaugural College Football Playoff was revealed on Monday.

The prize is a tall gold trophy with the College Football Playoff logo at the top. Underneath it is a solid black base that has the words “National Championship” inscribed on it.

The trophy is 24-karat gold, weighs 35 pounds and is a little more than two feet in height. It was designed by a design consultancy company called Pentagram.

“We probably looked at three or four dozen designs for the trophy,” said Bill Hancock, the executive director of the College Football Playoff, reports The Star Telegram. “We wanted something that could be hoisted. We wanted it to be a classic piece of art, and we’ve achieved all those goals.”

The trophy will be awarded to the winner of the four-team playoff. The championship game is slated for Jan. 12, 2015.

The two semifinal games will be played on New Year’s Day in Pasadena, Calif. at the Rose Bowl and in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl. The matchups for these games will be announced on Dec. 7 on ESPN at 12:45 p.m. EST, according to The Associated Press.
