Frank Underwood almost always comes out on top on House of Cards, but real-world politics have stepped in and denied him the chance to be at the United Nations. Russia has reportedly blocked a request for the production to film there.
The production had requested use of the Security Council room in New York, but emails obtained by Foreign Policy show that Russia denied the request. According to Politico, Russian officials said that the room needs to be available at all times in case a crisis arises.
The Moscow Times reports that Vitaly Churkin, a former actor and Russia’s ambassador to the UN, swooped in to stop House of Cards from shooting there just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, the deadline for any government to stop the request. China also sent an email agreeing with Churkin and Russian diplomat Mikhail Agasandyan.
“I think Mikhail's argument is reasonable,” Bo Shen, of the Chinese mission to the UN, is quoted as writing in one email.
House of Cards stars Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood, along with Robin Wright as the politician’s wife. Production on the show’s third season is underway. The show is available only on Netflix.
