French soldiers investigate Air Algerie crash site

Officials said Friday that French soldiers reached the Air Algerie crash site in Mali and began a full investigation to determine what caused the fatal crash.

Reuters noted that officials in Paris have said that poor weather conditions may have been the cause of the Air Algérie jetliner crash. They also believe that because the wreckage is over a limited area, the plane likely hit the ground while fully intact, suggesting that an attack is an unlikely scenario.

On Thursday, we reported that Flight AH 5017 from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso lost contact and disappeared while flying to Algeria. Wreckage from the Boeing MD-83 was later spotted in Mali, near the city of Gao.

Authorities have said that all 118 people on board perished in the crash.

“Sadly, there are no survivors," said French President Francois Hollande.

The plane was carrying over 50 French nationals.

The French troops joined an international team that had previously arrived at the site and identified the aircraft.
