Michigan jail changes prison uniforms after ‘Orange is the New Black’

By Mila Whiteley,

Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black is on a hot streak. The Emmy-nominated and critically acclaimed dark comedy is known for its sharp wit and its variety of characters, some of whom wear orange prison uniforms. This last fashion feature has unintentionally caused a change in the uniforms at Saginaw County Jail, as they will now revert back to past black and white uniforms.

As the popularity of Orange is the New Black and other prison shows has increased, Michigan Sheriff William Federspiel noticed an increase in everyday wear of the color orange, with a juror even once wearing all orange to a trial.

Explaining his decision to change back to black and white uniforms, Federspiel told Reuters that, “it was an easy decision. It was a cost savings and it breaks away from that cultural coolness. It's not cool to be an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail."

Jailhouse uniforms are relatively cheap. The items, which can last for two to three years, are about $11.73 each, as reported by the Associated Press.
