Missouri woman charged with knowingly spreading HIV

A 20-year-old woman from Missouri was charged with prostitution and knowingly spreading the HIV virus to her clients.

According to The Associated Press, Antionette Clark was arrested in a Colombia hotel on June 19. Clark agreed to have sex with an undercover officer for cash.

Clark was one of five people arrested in June as a part of this effort, according to KMBC. The officer found Clark on an online ad as a part of Colombia Police Department’s crackdown on prostitution.

At first Clark was simply charged with misdemeanor prostitution, but prosecution amended its charges saying that Clark had sex with clients while she knew she had HIV and spread the disease. Probable cause stated that Clark admitted to being HIV positive after being arrested. There are 221 people in the county with HIV, according to the most recent statewide statistics.

Andrea Waner, spokeswomen for the health department, urged those who are sexually active to get tested regularly because, though you may not see any symptoms, you can still have HIV. "We definitely recommend you not wait for symptoms to show up," Waner said.
