Authorities said a man was arrested after a standoff with police in Atlantic City, New Jersey ended early Wednesday morning.
According to WPVI, officials were called to the scene late Tuesday evening. When they arrived, they found that Christopher Gerace was barricaded inside a residence.
Officers surrounded the home and were able to make contact with the 35-year-old inside.
Neighbors reported hearing shots fired during the 90-minute standoff and were told to stay inside their homes.
Fearing police would shoot him if he came out the front door, Gerace ran out the back door naked and was quickly nabbed by SWAT officers before 1 a.m.
Gerace’s mother, Donna, told the Press of Atlantic City that her son is an Army veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. He called her that evening and said he wanted to kill himself.
"I'm just so happy he's not dead," she said. "He just kept saying to me on the phone, 'I don't want to live anymore. I want to kill myself.’"
His mother added that she believes the police did a wonderful job in handling the situation.
No one was injured during the standoff.
