Oscar Pistorius' defense team to wrap up case

By Michelle Kapusta,

After months of testimony in a trial that was only supposed to last a few weeks, Oscar Pistorius’ defense team has said that they will wrap up their case.

The Associated Press noted that the defense’s last witness testified on Monday and chief lawyer Barry Roux said that he will wrap up Tuesday morning after final consultations with his team.

"We plan to close the case," Roux told Judge Thokozile Masipa.

The next phase in the legal battle will be closing arguments given by both sides before Judge Masipa delivers her verdict.

Pistorius is on trial for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The prosecution contends that the 27-year-old Paralympian intentionally murdered her last year on Valentine’s Day after the two had an argument. Pistorius, however, has maintained that he fatally shot the model after mistaking her for an intruder.

The athlete has plead not guilty to murder and weapon charges. As previously reported, his attorneys also complained about a video reenactment of the alleged crime leaking on Australian television.

The trial has been going on since early March.
