Leonard Belzer, a radio personality and the brother of former Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actor Richard Belzer, committed suicide Wednesday morning. Residents said that he jumped from his Manhattan apartment building.
Belzer lived in the 11th floor of the 16-story building at 250 W. 94th St. Building workers told The New York Daily News that he jumped from the roof. His body was found in the courtyard just before 7:00 a.m.
Law enforcement sources told The New York Post that the 73-year-old did leave several suicide notes in his apartment. Authorities are still investigating whether he jumped from his balcony or the roof.
One building employee told the Post that Belzer had been in pain emotionally and physically in recent years, especially after his wife, Sesame Street director Emily Squires, died in November 2012. “He was in a lot of pain. He was hurting, stomach problems,” the employee said.
Another worker told the Daily News that he suffered from heart problems.
Richard Belzer, who recently left Law & Order: SVU full-time, has not commented on his brother’s death. The Daily News notes that their father, Charles, also committed suicide in 1968.
Belzer hosted the radio show The Comedy Hour and had served with the Air Force Intelligence Service.
