Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice retires

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice had decided to retire from professional football at the age of 27.

According to someone close to Rice, the wide receiver is retiring because of past concussions, USA Today reports.

Rice was cut by the team in February, but then he re-signed in April with a base salary of $1 million, according to CBS Sports.

Rice announced his decision in a statement released by the team.

“After careful consideration and seven wonderful years playing in the National Football League, including that last three for the Seattle Seahawks, I have decided to retire from playing in the National Football League.”

He went on to thank his coaches, teammates and fans and says he was proud in helping to build a Super Bowl contending team.

Rice was a second round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2007 and played his first four years there before signing with the Seahawks in the summer of 2011.

In his career, he caught 243 receptions for 3,592 yards and 30 touchdowns, while only playing 16 games twice in his career. He was also four for seven on passing attempts.
