He may live in a pineapple under the sea, but Spongebob Squarepants is heading above water in the new Paramount and Nickelodeon movie The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water. Spongebob has explored every nook and cranny of the ocean already, so the studio decided it’s time for him to hit our streets.
The trailer for Sponge Out Of Water sets up the plot for the film, which centers on a pirate who needs to find the last page of a book in order to put his evil plans in motion. Of course, Spongebob and his friends are the only ones standing in his way. The battle heads above water, where we learn that Patrick has an unhealthy relationship with ice cream.
Paramount announced plans for a new Spongebob movie back in 2012 and is the first time the character will be back in theaters in a decade. Yes, if that doesn’t make you feel old enough already, remember that Spongebob has been on the air since 1999.
The first Spongebob movie was a surprising success, grossing $85 million in the U.S. on a $30 million budget.
Sponge Out of Water opens on Feb. 6, 2105. It features the original cast, along with Antonio Banderas.
