Starz is about to launch another new original series, Outlander, and is already making changes for the show. During its panel at the TV Critics Association press tour Friday, the network said that the show’s first season will be split in half.
Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe as a combat nurse during World War II who is transported to 1743 and forced to marry Sam Heughan’s Scottish warrior. The show received a rather large (by premium cable terms) 16-episode order for its first season, so it was pretty easy for Starz to decide to chop it in half.
According to Deadline, the first eight episodes will start on Saturday, Aug. 9. Then, the second eight will start early next year.
The first episode will also be available for free starting on Aug. 2. The network believes that this will make the episode available to 82 million households, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
In another way to build up anticipation for the show, Starz is making a big push on social media, even launching OutlanderCommunity.com.
Outlander is based on books by Diana Gabaldon and is executive produced by Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore.
