Paramount and Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot hits theaters in Australia on Sept. 11, which apparently is already a good date for a movie featuring signature Bay explosions. To make matters worse, Paramount Australia tweeted a poster that featured one of those explosions and the Twitter anger it received was easily justified.
The image was posted on the Paramount Australia Twitter page, showed the four turtles jumping out of an exploding high-rise building. Someone in Paramount’s photoshopping department must have forgotten about what happened on Sept. 11, 2001, but no one else has. In addition, the movie is set in New York.
That tweet set off a Twitter firestorm, with many complaining about how insensitive it was. Some called it an obvious PR fail, notes Kotaku. “Really? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles jump out of fiery NY tower in poster for film released Sep 11,” Suzanne Carbone of Australia’s The Age wrote.
Paramount didn’t make any further comments on the situation, but Paramount Australia did delete the tweet. However, many of the people who complained about it shared the image.
