Winningest Tony award winner Audra McDonald reveals suicide attempt

Audra McDonald, six-time Tony award winner, is opening up about a former suicide attempt in an interview with Popcorn with Peter Travers.

McDonald has made history with winning the most Tony awards and tied the knot to Will Swenson in 2012, so she’s both successful in her personal and professional life. However, she revealed that when she was in college at Julliard, she dealt with depression.

"I had a suicide attempt. I tried to slit my wrist,” she said, ABC News reports.

She went on to say, "When someone is suicidal, one of the first things you have to do is to protect them from themselves.” She explained at Julliard, “they had a mental health facilitator there, a therapist there and they checked me into a mental health hospital where I was for a month and got me the help I needed."

From there, she went on anti-depressants and credits her career taking off to getting back on her feet.
