The cousin of former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez pleaded guilty to a criminal contempt charge on Tuesday.
According to Boston.com, Tanya Singleton received two years of probation and was ordered to home confinement for one of those years for initially refusing to testify against her cousin.
The Associated Press noted that Singleton has been battling breast cancer, which her lawyer said was in remission but returned and spread. Prosecutors asked for probation rather than jail time so that her care and treatment was not hindered.
Hernandez has been incarcerated since last year and is awaiting a January trial for the murder of acquaintance and semi-pro football player, Odin Lloyd.
The victim was reportedly dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée when he was found shot to death not far from the ex NFL tight end’s home in 2013.
In addition to the Lloyd murder case, Hernandez has also been charged in the shooting deaths of two men outside a Boston nightclub a year earlier.
The 24-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges.
