'American Idol' finalist Michael Johns dies at 35, autopsy doesn't show cause of death

By Daniel S Levine,

Over the weekend, American Idol fans were saddened to hear of the death of former finalist Michael Johns, who was just 35 years old. There is still no cause of death, even after the autopsy was performed.

Johns’ death was confirmed on Saturday. According to E! News, his manager wrote on Twitter, “It is with a heavy heart and inconsolable sadness that we confirm the passing of our friend Michael Johns. "No other details will b avail at this time. Please respect the privacy of Mike's family and friends as we know u will.”

Torrey Gimbill, his close friend, did tell E! News that he was complaining of chest pains in recent days and that his mother took him to an emergency room on Thursday. He died the next day.

“He had complained about his leg hurting him, he thought it might be a blood clot because it had bruised pretty badly and he never hurt his leg,” Gimbill said.

Now, TMZ reports that the Orange County Coroner's Office did not write down a cause of death on the autopsy report, deciding to wait until toxicology tests are completed. Law enforcement sources for the site claim that police were told that Johns was a heavy drinker and drank before his death.

Johns appeared on the seventh season of Fox’s Idol and released a studio album in 2009. Despite losing the show, he remained well-known in the music community and several mourned his death, including Josh Groban.
