Bakersfield couple married 62 years die four hours apart

Don and Maxine Simpson, a couple who had been married for nearly 62 years, died just four hours apart back on July 21.

Don was 90 and she was 87 and they died at a granddaughter's home after being check out of the hospital, the Bakersfield Californian reports.

He suffered from Alzheimer's disease and she had bladder cancer. Don broke his hip earlier in July and later developed pneumonia, requiring his hospitalization. His granddaughter, Melissa Sloan, later checked him out so they could be together in their final moments.

Maxine passed away first, early on July 21 and shortly after her body was removed from the room, Don died as well. "When her body left the room his soul left with her," Sloan said.

According to KERO-TV, the couple would meet in a bowling alley in Bakersfield, where Don had recently moved for his job. They married just a few years after that meeting.

During their 62 years of marriage, the Simpsons did everything together, including involvement in Boy's and Girl's Club, Rotary and YMCA. Don would go on to found the Bakersfield Racket Club as well.

They also lived in Germany, where they adopted two boys, for several years, before eventually returning to Bakersfield where he would become chief engineer at Kern County Public works Department and she a nurse.

"All Don wanted was to be with his beautiful wife," Sloan said after they both passed. "He adored my grandmother, loved her to the end of the Earth."
