Gotham has one more villain for Jim Gordon to contend with. The Batman prequel series will the mobster character Salvatore Maroni, who will be played by David Zayas.
Zayas, who appeared in Dexter signed on for the recurring role Friday, notes Deadline. The character was previously played by Eric Roberts in The Dark Knight.
Salvatore Maroni is one of the top mobsters in Gotham City and frequently battled Carmine Falcone for supremacy in the city. He eventually controlled the drug trade and unions, but in Gotham, his main role will be a foil for Falcone, played by John Doman in the series.
In related Gotham news, Digital Spy spoke with executive producer Danny Cannon, who worked on CSI and directed the Gotham pilot. He said that the iconic Mr. Freeze villain will eventually appear in the series, but will be rooted in reality.
“My first conversation with [showrunner] Bruno Heller about the villains in this show is always that they need to be very credible and relatable and the science behind them needs to be real,” Cannon said. “So I had a couple of stories that I'd held onto - real, true stories - and one of them just related to Mr Freeze. I know a real way to create an origin story.”
Gotham was developed by The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller and will premiere on Fox Sept. 22. Ben McKenzie stars as Jim Gordon.
